Position Description

To participate in the planning and delivery of academic advising/counseling services and programs that promote comprehensive educational opportunities for students.


  • ADVISING: Cooperate with faculty, staff, and administrators in providing for academic advising needs of students; provide information to students regarding degree requirements, academic policies, and institutional rules/regulations; provide information to students regarding institutional and community resources that may be useful in pursuit of academic goals and/or personal well-being; maintain student records with consistent academic advising notes in the Advisor Toolkit or Mainframe.
  • COMMUNICATION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Create reports upon request; attend monthly College Advisor Meetings, committee meetings; participating in office meetings and decision-making; cooperating with other departmental and campus offices; communicating and collaborating with colleagues and supervisor(s); attends and participates in training opportunities including Academic Counseling Association (ACA);identifies/attends classes that bolster skills.
  • COMMITTEE WORK: Member of one or more committees; assist with committee objectives and help ensure the committee meets its goals; take on special projects as requested; attend regular meetings; communicate with other relevant faculty, staff, and students; respond to internal and external inquiries about the program(s); create and update program promotional and informational materials; perform numerous administrative duties specific to the program.
  • STUDENT OUTREACH: Plan and participate in workshops, outreach, college and university wide programs, new student orientation and graduation ceremonies; assist with other college outreach events when called upon to do so.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and four years of experience working with college students in an academic counseling capacity or Master's degree in a related field and two years of experience in counseling, group work, assessment and administration of student academic programs.
  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • More than the required years of experience or education.
  • Experience in student affairs at The University of Texas or comparable academic advising experience at another institution.
  • Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Experience working with degree plans and degree audits.
