Position Description

The Office of Undergraduate Programs and Advising in the College of Business and Economics is seeking a Developmental Advising Specialist. This position will report to the Director of Undergraduate Programs and Advising, and will be responsible for providing academic counsel to approximately 400-450 freshman, sophomore and junior undeclared business and economics undergraduates.

Duties

  • Employ developmental and prescriptive models of academic advising in identifying competencies in quantitative, expository and technical subjects required for successful matriculation to majors in business administration and economics.
  • Work individually with students in identifying courses to build a matriculation plan, ensuring timely admission to one of eight undergraduate business and economics majors offered by the College.
  • Assist students with the approval process for attempting course work in transient.
  • Monitor progress with regard to completion of prerequisite courses and attainment of minimum GPA required for successful matriculation to a respective degree program and academic major.
  • Assist students with federal financial aid appeals in compliance with the Standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress for Financial Aid Eligibility and deadlines established by the Office of Financial Aid.
  • Assist students in exploring alternative degree programs to business administration and research admission requirements to determine if referral is possible.
  • Plan and implement First Year Academy in conjunction with the WVU Office of Undergraduate Education.
  • Be responsible for certain aspects of probation, suspension and retention.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in counseling, higher education counseling, guidance or a directly related field
  • Related work experience, particularly in higher education, is preferred
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may also be considered
