Position Description
The Director of the Undergraduate Advising Center is responsible to manage and strategically lead the Undergraduate Advising Center (UAC) at San Francisco State University. The UAC provides comprehensive academic counseling to help students achieve their academic, personal and career goals. The Center assists students in exploring and declaring majors, identifying their strengths and interests, and overcoming academic and personal challenges. In addition, the Undergraduate Advising Center helps students understand SF State’s graduation requirements (primarily general education) and university policies and procedures. The UAC encourages self-advocacy, and promotes academic success, timely graduation, and a lifetime of learning. The Undergraduate Advising Center is part of the Division of Undergraduate Education and Academic Planning (DUEAP). DUEAP is comprised of several units that collaborate to serve students and enhance learning. The Director of the Undergraduate Advising Center reports to the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education.

Structuring Work
•Deliver a student-centered advising model that is consistent with the philosophy and policies of the Undergraduate Advising Center, the Division of Undergraduate Education and Academic Planning, and San Francisco State University.
•Collaboratively manage a dedicated team of approximately 19 staff members, including professional academic counselors and administrative staff, in providing a full range of support services to undergraduate students at all stages of their academic careers. These services include: one-on-one appointments, walk-in advising, workshops, advising events, and online advising tools/resources.
•Responsible for all operational aspects of the Undergraduate Advising Center including budgeting, staffing, supervision, training, and event/project management.
•Working with the Office of New Student Programs, deliver academic advising services to new students at summer and winter orientations.
Managing Talent
•Strengthen the Undergraduate Advising Center’s team by identifying, hiring, and training new talent.
•Motivate, inform, and retain existing staff by offering on-going professional development opportunities both in-house and through participation in professional organizations.
•Work with UAC staff to collaboratively identify professional goals and areas of improvement; provide on-going supervision and support to assist in the attainment of mutually agreed upon goals.
Inspiring Performance
•Ensure that the UAC offers outstanding student support in a welcoming, customer service-oriented environment.
•Foster and promote the Principles of Conduct for a Multi-Cultural University and User Friendly Principles.Building Teams
•Represent the UAC and DUEAP as directed or appropriate on campus-wide committees and work groups.
•Participate in initiatives focused on student success, facilitating graduation, and improving academic advising.
•Work with the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education to increase the numbers of campus advisors assisting at summer orientation and to develop training for professional staff, faculty, and peers.
Using & Sharing Information
•To optimize the delivery of the advising services in the Undergraduate Advising Center, maintain excellent relationships with university constituencies, including administrative support services, colleges, schools, departments, and individual faculty.
•Represent the Undergraduate Advising Center’s perspective on university committees and to departments/units as appropriate.
•Assist in the development and implementation of online and print advising resources and tools.
•Creatively market the UAC’s services to students and the campus community, promoting the importance of seeking advising and understanding pathways to graduation.
Facilitating Change
•Work with the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education and the Undergraduate Advising Center’s staff to set annual goals for the Center and to develop strategies for reaching these goals.
•Design and implement an ongoing assessment plan of the Undergraduate Advising Center’s services and programs in order to provide continual improvement towards meeting the Center’s goals.
•Work closely with the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education to facilitate comprehensive academic advising efforts on campus, improving the delivery of advising while focusing on retention, student success, and graduation.

Required Qualifications 
•Master’s degree or terminal degree in counseling, higher education, student affairs, or a related discipline.
•Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in the effective administration of an academic advising center.
•Extensive experience in hiring, supervising, effectively working with, and retaining a diverse set of professionals.
•Experience with and sensitivity to developing and delivering advising services that meet the needs of a highly diverse, urban student population.
•Experience managing a budget.
•Experience working with faculty, staff, and administrators to develop and deliver effective advising programs and services.
•Ability to work collaboratively and effectively within a complex campus advising system where there are numerous constituents and stakeholders requiring accurate and timely communication of advising-related information.

Preferred Qualifications
•5 years or more of progressive, demonstrated experience and success in managing a medium to large-scale college or university advising unit.
•Ability to be a creative leader and manager who draws on the knowledge and strengths of the team to develop and advance the vision, mission, and goals of the Center.
•Practical and theoretical knowledge of how students’ academic skills development is affected by their cognitive and behavioral strengths and challenges.
•Knowledge of student development and counseling theory and its application to academic counseling and student support services.
•Experience in conflict resolution at the informal and formal levels.
•Knowledge of the California State University (CSU) System.
•Ability to interpret complex academic policies and apply them to individual student cases in an equitable and compassionate manner.
