Position Description

The incumbent is responsible for integrating key strategies that support student retention into the daily practices of the Academic Advising team. These retention strategies support the institutional strategic enrollment management plan and support the goal of increasing overall student retention on the BU campus. This visionary leader will advance the use of the Student Success Collaborative (SSC) and will join other campus constituents in promoting the use of SSC to support the student advising process. The director is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive advisement and retention program for undeclared, underprepared, and transfer students in collaboration with academic deans, department chairpersons, faculty advisors, admissions, the registrar, financial aid, and other administrative directors. The director provides research-based leadership in the areas of academic advisement and retention, as well as administrative direction for the office staff and professional advisors.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate or ABD in higher education, counseling, psychology, developmental education, or related field. Candidates with ABD must earn doctorate by tenure decision.

  • Minimum of five years of work experience at the higher education level.

  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and leadership skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and others within the university setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Evidence of building relationships with university or external constituencies.
  • Administrative experience.
  • Direct experience in academic advising.
  • Demonstrated commitment to at-promise, underprepared, underrepresented, transfer or undeclared students.
  • Published and/or presented scholarship in academic advisement and retention.
  • Demonstrated experience managing in a collective bargaining agreement environment.
