Position Description

The School of Journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia (MU), the flagship, land-grant, comprehensive research university of the University of Missouri System, seeks a Director of Student Services. The Director of Student Services is responsible for overseeing all areas of undergraduate student services for the School of Journalism including advising, admissions, academic actions and student success/retention initiatives. The director is responsible for supervision and development of online undergraduate degree programs. The Director of Student Services represents and advocates for students within the School of Journalism and fosters strong and effective collaborative relationships with a wide range of students, staff, faculty and administrators at the School of Journalism, MU and externally. The Director of Student Services reports to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies, advising administration and faculty on all policies and processes related to student success.

Duties

  • Responsible for overseeing all areas of Student Services including advising, admissions, academic actions and student success/retention initiatives. Responsible for supervision and development of online undergraduate degree program.
  • Directs academic advising for School of Journalism to ensure equitable and inclusive environment that welcomes and supports all students
  • Supervises academic advisors, office staff and student workers
  • Supervises and directs development of online undergraduate degree program
  • Oversees student service components of new academic initiatives (e.g., new program development, distance education growth, transfer student initiatives)
  • Analyzes student data and predictive analytics to advise administration, faculty and staff on best practices for student retention and graduation
  • Maintains and develops effective communication tools and strategies for undergraduate student service information needs
  • Serves as journalism liaison with Office of the Registrar
  • Serves as ex-officio member of Journalism Curriculum Committee; advising faculty and administration on federal/state/university requirements
  • Oversees delivery of student outcome surveys
  • Directs and facilitates student retention efforts
  • Engages the student services team in professional development activities and best practices to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for students, staff and faculty
  • Coordinates academic actions, including appeals, dismissals, probation, dean’s list
  • Oversees all functions related to student records management and transfer/readmit applications
  • Oversees programming to support student engagement and academic success (e.g., Summer Welcome, Fall Welcome, Group Advising, Career Announcements)
  • Directs and supervises Student Services staff in concert with Director of Communications staff to facilitate convocation and commencement ceremonies
  • Collaborates with student recruitment efforts led by Journalism Outreach and Engagement Coordinator, including facilitating involvement of advising office in recruitment efforts as needed
  • Teaches and facilitates advisors’ teaching of student success courses, as needed
  •  Maintains a limited ongoing advising caseload and engages in additional advising as needed (e.g., walk-in advising sessions, assisting with overflow as needed)
  • Advises school’s student organizations, as needed
  • Supports process of scholarships applications and awards, as needed
  • Provides support and guidance for faculty in School of Journalism on undergraduate student matters

A Bachelor’s degree, or the equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired, is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include a Master’s degree in related field; experience with academic advising in higher education; supervisory skills and experience; experience with student-facing programs in higher education; prior work with student engagement and retention initiatives; experience working in collaborative, team-oriented environments; strong communication skills; and effective project management skills.
