Position Description

James Madison University (JMU) seeks a creative and forward thinking leader to serve as the next Director of University Advising. The Director provides strategic leadership for an established unit that directly supports the university's mission to prepare educated and enlightened citizens who lead meaningful and productive lives.

University Advising fosters student success by helping undergraduates understand degree requirements, developing accurate resources to assist them with academic planning beyond the first year, and promoting common advising objectives regardless of major. The unit includes: nine full-time, professional, academic advisors assigned to specific academic departments; three advising coordinators who advise prospective transfer students at Virginia community colleges; an international academic advising coordinator; a full-time administrative assistant; one graduate assistant; and fourteen Madison Advising Peers, undergraduates who work part-time in the main office and in multiple satellite locations across campus. During transfer orientation, the office also hires and trains temporary personnel, including faculty members, who serve as intake advisors. University Advising is housed in University Programs in the division of Academic Affairs.


The Director holds a full-time, 12-month position with salary commensurate with experience. Preferred start date is July 1, 2018. The Director reports to the Vice Provost for University Programs. The Director provides vision and leadership for the unit, oversees its budget and day-to-day operations, supervises its professional, administrative, and student staff, and coordinates with relevant offices such as Orientation, Admissions, General Education, the Registrar's Office, and Career and Academic Planning.

  • Maintains productive relationships with academic unit heads in all departments, especially units where University Advising has assigned an academic advisor to support student progression in the major (biology, health sciences, hospitality and sports management, interdisciplinary liberal studies, justice studies, media arts and design, nursing, political science, psychology).
  • Promotes common advising goals across the university by collaborating with academic departments, other professional advising centers, co-chairing the Academic Advising Board, and hosting periodic advising workshops and discussions.
  • Coordinates academic advising for 1,000 new transfer students a year by updating text for transfer publications and website, providing professional development for new and continuing transfer advisors, identifying and addressing registration challenges, and managing advising support in the registration labs.
  • Develops yearly expenditure goals, approves requests for part-time funding, monitors monthly expenditure reports, and complies with institutional policies and guidelines.
  • Prepares reports on student data and works to ensure a positive experience for students and advisors.
  • Periodically visits the community colleges that host JMU transfer advisors and monitors advising practices, academic policies, and student needs at those locations.
  • Supports international academic advising by collaborating with the International Study Center at JMU, serving on its local operations team, and contributes to discussions about policies and procedures.
  • Provides on-going supervision and support to unit staff.
  • Oversees the annual hiring and training of the university's innovative Madison Advising Peers (MAPs) program and provides hands-on mentoring.
  • Ensures the continued development and maintenance of high quality advising tools such as the Academic Advising websites and AdviseStream, a software solution used by some programs on campus.
  • Ability to envision and advocate for future projects and resources.

Required Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in a relevant field such as Counseling, Student Personnel Administration, or Higher Education Administration
  • A sincere commitment to the welfare and success of undergraduates
  • Deep knowledge of advising practices in higher education
  • Minimum 5 years in a leadership position in academic administration with supervisory and budget responsibility
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with individuals across many different offices, units, and programs
  • Experiences that indicate the candidate values diversity and inclusivity as essential preconditions for supporting the needs of all students
  • Involvement with international student advising and international transfer credit preferred
