Position Description

The International Student Advisor is responsible for providing all aspects of advising to international students to support recruitment and retention in order to meet the enrollment goals of the College. This position reports to the Director of International Advising.


  • Provide personal, relationship-based care and advising for international students in areas including: academic, university transfer, immigration, personal, employment, cultural, and health
  • Serve as lead advisor for designated areas of study
  • Assist students in creating customized degree plans in order to help them achieve their educational goals
  • Provide orientation sessions for international students
  • Work collaboratively with IP marketing team and other areas of International Programs and Extended Learning (IPEL) to continuously improve Green River's outstanding and competitive int'l advising program with a focus on nationwide university transfer
  • Market and promote GRC's educational programs and services to students, international agents and organizations
  • Develop and implement recruitment and retention strategies in collaboration with the advising team, marketing team, and other areas of IPEL
  • Some evening and weekend work required
  • Occasional domestic and international travel required
  • Execute other related responsibilities as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience living abroad or studying abroad
  • Demonstrated intercultural competency
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and build relationships
  • Ability to provide comprehensive international student advising: academic, university transfer, immigration, personal, employment, cultural, and health
  • Ability to interpret academic degree requirements, academic policies and procedures to facilitate student academic progress
  • Ability to use and learn appropriate technology including Salesforce, MS Office and social media
  • Ability to work within legal and ethical guidelines for WA state higher education institutions
  • Attention to detail and good follow through
  • Effective interpersonal and project management skills
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment with little downtime
  • Experience working in an educational setting
  • Must meet the Department of Homeland Securities' requirements for a Designated School Official

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree
  • Experience in academic advising
  • Experience in transfer or admissions advising
  • Experience advising international students on immigration regulations
  • Experience in marketing, recruitment or outreach
  • Experience working in a community college
  • Fluency in a language other than English
