Position Description

The pre-law advisor provides educational services and support to all Binghamton University students and recent graduates who are interested in attending law school or pursuing legal careers.


Responsibilities of the pre-law advisor include: Providing information on the curricular and co-curricular opportunities required to develop the skills and experiences required for success in law school Providing information on law schools, including rankings and other statistics, and evaluating advisees' chances of obtaining admission to particular programs Assisting advisees with the law school application process, including the personal statement, letters of recommendation, LSATs, etc. Providing support and offering relevant resources for underrepresented students Advising on the financial aspects of law school, including costs and income expectations Coordinating pre-law activities on campus, including speakers, training sessions, etc. Coordinating communication with the Harpur Law Council, other alumni in the legal field, and faculty and staff on campus Pre-law advising resides in the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences Academic Advising Office. The pre-law advisor works closely with faculty and staff in a busy, collaborative environment. Additionally, the pre-law advisor will: Participate in New Student Orientation and recruitment events Offer programs, workshops, and outreach to assist students as they make their decision whether to pursue law school Connect with pre-law student groups and faculty Coordinate the annual campus Law Day Collect law school admission data and prepare an annual pre-law report Maintain and promote a network of faculty, attorneys and law students as advising resources Connect with pre-law advisors and law school admissions representatives Write dean's letters and process bar statements Review and award pre-law scholarships Provide general academic advising as needed The successful candidate will be highly organized, self-disciplined, and able to work independently and as a part of a team.

Required Qualifications


Requirements: Master's degree 3 - 5 years of experience in higher education or legal setting Understanding of, appreciation for, and proven experience working with diverse constituencies Effective and professional communication skills, both written and oral Ability to participate in evening/weekend programming (occasional travel will be necessary) Exceptional public speaking and presentation skills Proven ability to complete responsibilities in a professional and timely manner

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge and understanding of college student population, particularly pre-law students Demonstrated understanding of law school admissions Experience with PowerPoint, website maintenance, database management, and Excel
