Position Description

The Pre-Health Professions Academic Counselor will be responsible for the developmental advisement of students preparing for professional school programs in pre-chiropractic, pre-dental, pre-medicine, pre-optometry, pre-pharmacy, pre-physician assistant, pre-podiatry, and pre-veterinary medicine. The Academic Counselor will be providing:

  • Personal, academic, and career counseling
  • Teaching pre-health first year experience course
  • Working with the pre-health living learning community
  • Monitoring students’ progress
  • Developing and implementing student development programs focusing on preparation for professional school application and entrance
  • Serving as a liaison to professional schools
  • Referring students to relevant campus services
  • Working collaboratively with diverse constituents, including students, student groups, faculty, admissions officers, fellow advising administrators, and administrative staff requiring strong interpersonal and effective oral and written communication skills
  • Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

  • Attentiveness to detail, strong organization skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple requests and handle them in an efficient and timely manner
  • Sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population, including minority and international students.

Required Qualifications


• Master’s degree required • Two years of experience working with students in a higher education setting which may include graduate assistantships

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience within healthcare related professional schools • Experience with learning communities • Experience in career, personal, and academic counseling preferred
