Position Description
The Professional Advisor will work as part of an advising team advising students pursuing a variety of majors at California State University, Los Angeles.

Duties
Responsibilities include: student advising; participating in advising workshops; engaging in e-advising and targeted advising campaigns; and utilizing best practices to assist at risk students in need of additional services. Advisors are expected to develop, coordinate, implement, and evaluate specialized academic advising programs, services, or workshops using professional resources and/or literature and will be participating in university wide activities such as: orientation; outreach activities; and other campus events involving community and educational partners. The incumbent will keep current on university policies and procedures and provide input during department meetings as requested. Working as part of an advising team, the incumbent will help develop strategies to improve graduation rates, student retention, and ensure all student groups receive support to achieve academic success.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications
Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Two years of full-time professional experience in one of the student services program areas on in a related field. Experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job-related field may substitute for one year of the professional experience. Must have an understanding of standard office procedures, be computer literate and be proficient in standard word processing and database software including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. Must possess excellent organizational skills and excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to: communicate by phone and email; plan, organize and prioritize work; develop and maintain database systems; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; exercise tact, courtesy, alertness and good judgment when responding to others; multi-task; complete assignments in a timely fashion; and work under pressure. Demonstrated interest and ability in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from an accredited college or university in a related field. Academic advising experience with lower and upper division courses. Previous experience working on a college campus. Knowledge of general university policies and procedures. Familiarity with GET/PeopleSoft or other university operating systems.
