Position Description

The Sr. Advisor in the School of Nursing and Health Studies’ (SONHS) Office of Student Services (OSS) reports to the Assistant Dean and collaborates daily with University constituents to carry out OSS’ mission and offer the highest-quality advising services.  The Sr. Advisor works closely with SONHS and University personnel to sustain school-wide growth and long-term operational excellence by advising SONHS undergraduate students, helping undergraduates construct of viable graduation plans, developing digital and print media pieces to support advising goals, and working diligently to promote the academic success, retention, and graduation of all SONHS students.  The ideal applicant will be able to engage and assist a diverse student body and to work closely with faculty, administration, and outside constituents.  To this aim, he/she must possess excellent analytical, communication, organizational, interpersonal, and customer service skills.  It is also important the Sr. Advisor be able to be self-directed as well as collaborative to work effectively as a member of the OSS team.  Approximately 3 years of related work experience and a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required.

Duties

  • Collaborates daily with the Assistant Dean,, student employees, and other University constituents to carry out OSS’ mission and offer the highest-quality advising services
  • Advises undergraduates on curricular, extracurricular, and post-baccalaureate opportunities and assists them in the construction of viable graduation plans to reach their academic and professional career goals
  • Serves as the first point of contact for new undergraduate student intakes as well as general advising-related phone calls
  • Keeps abreast of graduate health professional program requirements (e.g., GPA, standardized tests, and prerequisite coursework) to provide students with most current information
  • Assists with tracking student registration and follows up with students to promote academic success, retention, and graduation
  • Works with the Assistant Dean to provide students with SONHS-related course equivalencies
  • Continually works with the Office of Admission and the Registrar to ensure all transfer work is posted in CaneLink and all transfer equivalencies are properly assigned
  • Conducts Degree Progress Report reviews at least twice a year to ensure students are on track for graduation, and follows up with students as questions arise
  • Works with the Sr. Advisor and Assistant Dean to clear all students for graduation and ensure degrees are conferred in a timely basis
  • Meets and communicates with prospective students and parents to discuss undergraduate opportunities within SONHS and the larger University
  • Works closely with the Assistant Dean to maintain various advising-related databases and provide advising-related reports as needed
  • Maintains accurate student academic records
  • Creates, writes, prepares, updates, and sends various forms, handouts, letters, and cards
  • Helps develop digital and print media pieces to support advising goals
  • Stocks various publications
  • Sends mass communications to students as needed
  • Proactively seeks new information and generates new solutions to unfamiliar situations
  • Stays abreast of SONHS and University opportunities, policies, and procedures to provide students with accurate information and refer to others as appropriate
  • Assists with student onboarding (e.g., Orientation) and other OSS-related events as needed
  • Helps answer OSS phones and address general student inquiries as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 3 years of related experience
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Word
  • Excellent analytical, communication, organizational, interpersonal, and customer service skills
  • Outstanding multi-tasking and problem-solving skills to ensure multiple and complex projects are accomplished successfully and on time in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to engage and assist a diverse student body and to work closely with faculty, administration, and outside constituents
