Position Description

Academic Specialist, Fixed Term twelve month 100% appointment in the College of Arts & Letters Dean’s Office and the Center for Gender in Global Context (GenCen). Duties include serving as an academic advisor for undergraduate students majoring or minoring in Women’s and Gender Studies and those minoring in LGBTQ and Sexuality Studies, as well as serving as an academic advisor for graduate students in the Women’s and Gender Studies; Gender, Justice, and Environmental Change; and International Development specializations. This includes academic program planning; recruiting and providing information on education abroad; experiential education including internships, research, fellowships, career development, and related topics; participation in the development and implementation of activities/projects related to student success; participation in all Academic Orientation Programs; teaching one WS- or AL-coded course per semester; and degree certification.

This individual will be responsible for working with students from their first year through graduation. The position interfaces regularly with faculty and academic staff in the GenCen and College of Arts & Letters Dean’s Office, the Honors College, and other units on campus. In addition, this position will be responsible for representing the GenCen and College of Arts & Letters at various undergraduate and graduate recruiting events. The individual will participate in college-wide advisor meetings and other meetings, workshops, and events related to advising, recruitment, and retention around the university. The advisor will also lead organization of events to build community among program enrollees, periodically attend and present updates at GenCen Advisory Committee meetings, participate in the GenCen Curriculum Committee, and contribute to GenCen reports and promotional materials related to curricular programs.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Women’s and Gender Studies, Student Affairs Well prepared candidates will have at least two years of full-time work in advising or student affairs.
  • Excellent written, oral, and dynamic presentation communication skills and strong work ethic are essential.
  • Strong organizational skills with an emphasis on long term planning and implementation are vital to the success of the applicant.
  • Technical skills in word-processing, database management, PowerPoint, and spreadsheets.
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with Academic Advisors and a diverse student population, faculty, and potential employers.
