Position Description
Under the general supervision of the Director of Student Services, in conjunction with other Natural Sciences (NS) Advisors, the Student Academic Advisor will provide academic advising for prospective and current students in the School's programs. The Student Academic Advisor works closely with NS faculty in the planning, development, and implementation of a coordinated and comprehensive academic advising program for freshman and transfer students. The incumbent interprets and explains University and School policies and procedures relevant to undergraduate programs. The Student Academic Advisor provides a welcoming atmosphere for students into the School and directs them to appropriate University resources. The incumbent advises and counsels individuals with unique and/or confidential problems, and arranges specialized help for students, as needed, through other support services within the University. 

Duties 
The Student Academic Advisor uses professional concepts in providing prescriptive advise on academic policies and procedures for an academic department/college/school, including major and minor requirements, and all aspects of course requirements for degree or program completion. The incumbent works independently on issues that are straightforward and/or have clear guidelines, and receives assistance on more complex issues.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications
• Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training required.
• Basic knowledge of advising and individual and group counseling techniques
.• Knowledge of departmental/school/college courses and majors.
• Knowledge of department/school/college policies, procedures, and requirements.
• Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving.• Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original idea to solve problems.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including active listening.
• Ability to multi-task.

 Preferred Qualifications 
 
Master’s Degree in Counseling, Student Affairs, or Education preferred.
